Math For All
Math for All
A video series for families of students pre K3; 8 halfhour video programs and guide Host Hanne Bauer gives adults the confidence they need to help children learn math concepts through games and activities. Each video focuses on a single math concept and shows how everyday items such as beans, buttons, coins, and string can be used to practice and improve sorting, estimating, and other basic math skills. Try an Activity Math for All Support Materials 1. Unmasking Math Encourages children to develop math and social skills by doing daily chores such as setting the table, sorting toys, tableware or socks, and playing games of chance. (Also available in Spanish.) 2. Guessing Shows the importance of estimating to develop logic and flexible thinking, as well as problemsolving and decisionmaking skills. (Also available in Spanish.) 3. Patterns, Patterns, Patterns Alerts children to recognize, classify and organize a range of patterns in clothes, numbers, songs, floors and nature. (Also available in Spanish.) 4. Numbers Children learn to identify ages, measure, place items in order, and understand how numbers can be used to mean different things. (Also available in Spanish.) 5. Measure for Measure Using string, toothpicks and other household items, children see how big or little, long or short, tall or wide everyday items can be. They also learn different measuring systems in cooking, estimating clothing size and other activities. (Also available in Spanish.) 6. Time and Money Enables parents to teach their children important math concepts while playing games that show how money and time are used in our daily lives. (Also available in Spanish.) 7. Taking a Chance Makes it easy to learn decision making by encouraging children to collect information about a situation, compare choices, then decide whether or not to "take a chance." (Also available in Spanish.) 8. Shapes in Space Shows how shapes help us describe what we see and touch, and better understand the world around us. (Also available in Spanish.) A video series for families of children grades 46; 8 halfhour video programs and guide This series helps parents become more comfortable as they work with their children to incorporate math into their daily lives. Math for All—Plus provides handson activities and advice for parents of older elementary school children (grades 46). (I have not tried any of these yet...) Basic geometry through gumdrops and toothpicks Math for AllPlus Try an Activity Support Materials 1. Making Connections Shows math in action: shopping for bargains, picking out clothes for school, and doing many other common activities. Explains how to understand and use mathematics and estimation. (Also available in Spanish.) 2. Shapes in Space Points out two and threedimensional geometric shapes in our world using fruit, cereal boxes, and canned goods. Viewers learn how to construct and examine geometric figures. (Also available in Spanish.) 3. Information, Please! Looks at ads, election polls, and other types of information. Helps children understand how information is collected, represented, and analyzed so that better informed decisions can be made. (Also available in Spanish.) 4. Is It Fair? Lets children try to “beat the odds” as they find out how mathematics is used every time we play games. (Also available in Spanish.) 5. Measure Up! Explains customary and metric measurements and how they are used to measure objects and distance. Helps children learn when estimation can be used, when accuracy is required and which tools are best to use when. 6. We've Got Your Number! Helps viewers understand whole and fractional numbers and how they are used in real situations. (Also available in Spanish.) 7. What's My Rule? Shows relationships between numbers including patterns, models, tables, rules, and formulas. Includes games to help unlock the mystery of relationships between numbers. (Also available in Spanish.) 8. Connecting Again! Counts the beat of music, the geometry in art, and the rhythmic patterns in poetry to illustrate that mathematics is found and used everywhere.
